Harvestworks Art and Technology Program
Nolan Park, Building 10a
Governor’s Island, NYC
Description: Live coding is the act of altering algorithms in real time in order to manipulate an ongoing artistic process, like music or visuals. This event features musician and educator Melody Loveless, who will perform using Sonic Pi, a live coding synthesizer based on Ruby. For this event, Melody will perform before sharing a presentation on live coding and introduction on Sonic Pi. Hands-on participation is optional but those wanting to code along during the demonstration should bring a laptop with Sonic Pi already installed and headphones. Download Sonic for free at: https://sonic-pi.net/
Description: This hands-on workshop is an introduction to using Sonic Pi, a live coding synthesizer where users write code to generate music. This workshop is geared towards first-timer users and will focus on the basics of using Sonic Pi, focusing on skills necessary for layering sounds and performance. Participants will learn how to playback and loop samples, play pitches with built-in synthesizers, build their own rhythms and sequences, add effects to their loops, and more.
Participants are highly recommended to bring their own laptop (with Sonic Pi already installed) and headphones. (Limited laptops will be available for participants to share.) Download Sonic for free at: https://sonic-pi.net/
Note: Easiest way for participants to start right away is using the online browser – https://hydra.ojack.xyz/ (requires WiFi)
Description: This workshop is an introduction to creating visuals using Hydra, a live coding environment inspired by analog modular video synthesis. Participants will learn techniques for generating visuals, creating feedback loops, importing media as sources, and techniques for mixed reality using the webcam. Hydra is free and available to use via the web browser and for download. Participants are highly recommended to bring their own laptop and install Atom and the atom-hydra plugin. (Limited laptops will be available for participants to share.)
